How do memories form, age, and distort our own perception of reality? During a three-month lockdown with occasional curfews in Portugal, my partner and I developed a routine of taking an evening walk to the beach just before sunset. This routine resulted in nearly 4,000 digital images, capturing the same sunset, the same stretch of beach, the same streets, plants, dogs, and so on in the most beautiful colours. Even at that time, I wondered what these images actually showed and how they contributed to my memory of those pivotal moments.

To depict the process of remembering, slow distortion, and forgetting, I fed a neural network with my images from that time, long before ChatGPT, Midjourney, Dalle-2, and other AI systems existed, with the task of creating new images. The resulting images were then compiled into an artist's book.
With this, I gave the digital thought and memory process of artificial intelligence a tangible body, attempting to symbolize how the daily walks felt - a walk that usually ended with a shared piece of pastry on the beach: Sugar by the Sea
